January is recognized as Cervical Cancer Awareness month, a time to raise awareness of cervical health and prevention.
A cervix connects the uterus and the birth canal (vagina). When abnormal cells in the cervix grow out of control, this can lead to cervical cancer. Anyone with a cervix is at risk of cervical cancer; however Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, is the leading cause.
Anyone can be infected with HPV. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HPV causes about 36,000 cases of cancer in both men and women each year, and nearly everyone who is not vaccinated will get HPV at some point in their lives. The CDC recommends that boys and girls get the HPV vaccine when they are 11-12 years of age.
“Every year HPV and cervical cancer impact the lives of so many people. Our clinics are here to help, whether it’s through vaccinations, exams or testing.” said Family Planning Nurse Practitioner, Lindy Gray.
The Immunizations Clinic at CLCPH offers a variety of vaccinations, including the HPV vaccine.
The Family Planning Clinic at CLCPH offers STI testing, STI treatment, and reproductive wellness exams for all gender identities, as well as Pap smears. All services are confidential, and all ages are welcome. Only the consent of the patient is needed to receive services.
Clinic hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. To schedule an appointment call 307-633-4000.
“Community health is our mission, and we hope you make it yours. If you do not have insurance, there are options for you to still get the screening and treatment you deserve. Our family planning clinic accepts Medicaid and most private insurance and provides services on a sliding fee scale to those who qualify. Staff can also help with enrollment in the Wyoming Cancer Program. Give us a call to see how we can help you.” said Director of Nursing, Kasey Mullins, MSN, RN.
HPV Prevention Week is January 27th through the 31st.
