After more than two decades of service, Dr. Stan Hartman has retired from his role as Laramie County Health Officer. The Laramie County Board of Health and Cheyenne-Laramie County Public Health extend their deep gratitude for Dr. Hartman’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to protecting the health of our community.
Dr. Hartman has served since 2003, guiding Laramie County through a number of public health challenges, including West Nile virus, anthrax concerns, avian influenza, pertussis outbreaks, and the COVID-19 pandemic. His steady leadership during times of uncertainty helped safeguard the health and safety of thousands of residents.
“My 22 years at Cheyenne-Laramie County Public Health have been interesting, occasionally challenging, but also rewarding. The best part was the staff of dedicated public health professionals with whom it was my privilege to work.” said Dr. Hartman. “I am proud of the progress that public health has made in that time, and I know I am leaving this work in good hands.”
Dr. A.J. Meares was appointed as County Health Officer on August 19, 2025.
Dr. Meares, a Cheyenne native, brings deep experience and a strong commitment to public service. He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Wyoming before completing medical school at Creighton University. He went on to complete his fellowship in nephrology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr Meares has practiced medicine locally for almost 20 years and is recognized as a highly skilled nephrologist and respected leader in the medical community.
“We are confident Dr Meares’ expertise and leadership will continue the tradition of strong public health in Laramie County, said Cheyenne-Laramie County Public Health Executive Director, Dr. Kathy Emmons. “His deep ties to the community and medical knowledge make him an excellent choice to serve as County Health Officer.”
