Family Emergency Preparedness

Being prepared for the unexpected is essential for every household in Laramie County.

In our region, preparation must account for unique challenges like intense winds and sudden weather shifts. When assembling your family’s emergency kit, don’t forget the specific needs of the smallest – and fluffiest – members of your family. Use the following list and resources to ensure your family is ready for at least 3 days of self-reliance.

Building a Basic Emergency Kit

  • Water: Store 3 gallons per person (roughly 1 gallon per day).
  • Weather Layers: Pack extra wool socks, thermal blankets, and windproof outer layers.
  • Light: Keep a flashlight with extra batteries handy; avoid candles due to fire risks.
  • Health Essentials: Maintain a 7-day supply of prescriptions, a basic first aid kit (bandages, antiseptic, thermometer), and personal hygiene items like masks and hand sanitizer.
  • Paper & Cash: Keep a waterproof folder with IDs, insurance, and vaccination records, along with small bills in case digital payment systems are down.
  • For Kids: Include a comfort item like a favorite blanket or bear, non-perishable snacks, and “boredom busters” such as coloring books or cards.
  • For Pets: Pack 3 days of food, a sturdy leash, and a copy of their rabies certificate.
