How to Collect a Well Water Sample for Testing

Proper sample collection is an important step in obtaining accurate sample results.

Water samples should not be taken from a swing arm faucet, a contaminated faucet, or a leaky faucet that allows water to flow over the outside of the spout.

To ensure proper sample collection, follow the instructions below.

  1. Obtain your collection bottle from the Cheyenne Laramie County Public Health building. Do not open the bottle until you collect the sample. Do not touch the inside of the sample bottle. Do not rinse the bottle. Do not write on the bottle or the outer container.
  2. Select a faucet, and remove the aerator and screen from the faucet.
  3. Open the faucet, and allow the water to run freely for 3-4 minutes to flush the line.
  4. Reduce the flow (to a level that will permit you to fill the bottle without splashing), and continue to let the water flow for an additional 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the paper seal from your sample bottle. To uncap the bottle, hold the bottle near the base and
twist off the lid with your fingers. Do not touch the inside of the sample bottle.
  6. Fill the container to “100 Ml” line.
  7. Replace the cap immediately, and twist it back on tightly to prevent leaks.
  8. Store your sample for transport in a cool, dark container, such as an ice-packed cooler.
  9. Return the sample to the Cheyenne Laramie County Public Health building by 3 p.m. the same day it is collected.
    • Note: Samples must be collected and submitted to Cheyenne Laramie County Public Health by 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, or by noon on Thursday.

When you return the sample, please provide a daytime phone number. If the sample is unacceptable, you will be contacted by phone.

All sample results will be mailed to the addressee in about 7-10 days.
